Fast Times At SRI

First in Florida

The last 2 weeks has been an incredible time at Sarasota Retina Institute. As many of you have heard 2 weeks ago Dr. Levy  placed the first implantable miniature telescope in the state of Florida. This marks an incredible advancement for the treatment of patients with dry macular degeneration.  It is such a major achievement that it was reported in multiple media sources, including ABC  7, the Herald Tribume, and even Youtube.

Meeting of the Minds

Last week Dr. Levy and I spent 4 days at the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society meeting. This is a gathering of the nations top minds in neuro-ophthalmology and even includes many international presenters. We attended daily lectures by some of the top neuro-ophthalmologists who presented newly discovered disease, new imaging techniques and brand new treatment options for previously untreatable diseases. It is an exciting time for neuro-ophthalmology, as we are now becoming more of  treating specialty and less of a just a diagnostic specialty. Advances are coming down the research pipeline in areas such as stem cells that will soon allow us to treat patients with optic nerve disease. Listening and talking with other people there I have added new weapons in my arsenal to help take care of my patients.

Bringing the Experts to Florida

After returning to Florida Thursday started our 27 annual Sarasota Retina Update Course. We invited experts in retina and neuro-ophthalmology from around the country to lecture on new topics in both fields. This year included renowned speakers such as Dr. Harry Flynn, Dr. Jerry Sebag, Dr. Gill Grand, Dr Jerry and Carol Shields, Dr. Sunil Srivastava and Dr. Greg Kosmorsky. The presentations this year covered topics such as macular degeneration treatment updates, incredible new concepts of the vitreous, pain pathways, retinal detachment treatments, and ocular tumors. Physicians from around the area and even from other states descended on sarasota to listen to these experts talk. I was even lucky enough to share the speaking podium with these ophthalmology legends and lecture on treatments for double vision.

I wanted to let you all know what has been going on in our practice. It has been a whirlwind pace to accomplish it all, but it is worth it to be able to provide improved care to our patients.

Stay tuned for more educational articles from all of us at Sarasota Retina Institute. I hope you have enjoyed the previous ones and can learn from each one.
